There is a quiet anxiety that many Christian students feel when they first walk into a science class at a “doctrinally sound” university. They wonder: *Will my professor be safe? Will I have to choose between the Bible and the evidence in front of me?*

This tension is the very reason **Dr. Steven Ball**, a Christian physicist and educator, wrote his insightful booklet, *“A Christian Physicist Examines the Age of the Earth.”*

At *Atoms and Adam*, we believe that all truth is God’s truth. We also believe that parents and teachers should not have to fear science when teaching their children about origins. Dr. Ball’s work is a perfect example of how a faithful adherence to Scripture and a rigorous respect for scientific data can coexist—not just peacefully, but harmoniously. As the Apostle Paul urged, we are called to “reason together” (Isaiah 1:18), trusting that the God who spoke the universe into existence has left us clues in both His Word and His works.

## Why This Resource Matters

Dr. Ball does not ask readers to abandon the authority of the Bible. Instead, he invites us to look at the physical universe as another testament to God’s glory. He argues that when we let the evidence speak for itself, we find a universe that is approximately **4.6 billion years old**—a timeline that reflects the vastness and majesty of the Creator rather than diminishing it. This aligns with the psalmist’s declaration that “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; And the expanse is declaring the work of His hands.” (**Psalm 19:1**).

### Three Key Insights for Parents and Teachers

If you are struggling to explain the age of the Earth to your children or students, this document offers three foundational concepts that are both scientifically robust and theologically sound:

**1. The “Coroner” Analogy**
Dr. Ball uses a powerful analogy: just as a coroner can determine the time of death by examining the body and its environment without having been present at the moment of death, scientists can determine the age of the Earth by examining the “clues” left behind in rocks, stars, and isotopes. This helps children understand that science is a valid tool for uncovering God’s history, not a conspiracy against faith. It reminds us that God’s creation bears the marks of His work, fulfilling the promise that His invisible qualities are clearly seen from what has been made (**Romans 1:20**).

**2. Understanding “Day” (*Yom*) in Genesis**
One of the biggest stumbling blocks for believers is the six days of creation. Ball gently explores the Hebrew word *yom*, noting that in Scripture it often refers to an indefinite period or an era (e.g., “the day of the Lord”). He highlights that the sun—the marker for a 24-hour rotation—was not created until the fourth day, suggesting that the “evening and morning” of Genesis 1 may represent the orderly transition from chaos to structure rather than a literal 24-hour clock. This interpretation respects the text while acknowledging that “that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day.” (**2 Peter 3:8**).

**3. Rejecting the “Grand Illusion”**
Some argue that God created the universe with the *appearance* of age (e.g., light already in transit) to make it look old. Ball challenges this, arguing that such a view implies God created a “grand illusion” or a deceptive universe. Instead, he posits that the light *did* travel, the stars *did* shine for billions of years, and the universe is genuinely ancient. This makes the testimony of the heavens in Psalm 19 far more profound: the stars are not actors in a play, but true witnesses to God’s enduring power. As Jesus warned, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” (**John 4:24**); a universe built on truth rather than illusion honors the character of our Creator.

## A Path Forward for Faith and Science

This resource is not about winning a debate; it is about freeing the next generation from the fear that science will destroy their faith. As Ball writes:

> “I have discovered a beautiful fit between good science and solid faith in Christ and the Bible… The wonderful truth that I have realized is that there is no need to be afraid of science, since it truly does uphold the Word of God.”

For parents navigating the complex questions of **Deep Time**, **Geology**, and **Genesis**, this booklet is an essential starting point. It validates the uncertainty of the unknown while affirming the certainty of God’s character. We are reminded that “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever” (**Psalm 119:160**), whether that truth is found in the pages of Scripture or the layers of the Grand Canyon.

We highly encourage you to read Dr. Ball’s full text. It is written with clarity, humility, and a deep love for both the Creator and His creation.
